Art Therapy
What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy is a type of therapy that uses creative expression—like drawing, painting, or other visual arts—to help you explore emotions, process experiences, and support personal growth. It blends traditional counselling techniques with evidence-based art therapy approaches, allowing you to work through challenges in a safe, supportive space.
How is Art Therapy Different from Traditional Counselling?
Traditional counselling often focuses on talking through thoughts and feelings.
Art therapy combines verbal reflection with non-verbal expression through art.
Creating art can help uncover emotions and insights that are hard to put into words.
Art therapy helps an individual to process and heal trauma by engaging both hemispheres of the brain (logical and emotional) in the processing of thought, feeling and memory.
How Online Art Therapy Works
Sessions are conducted virtually, so you can create and reflect from the comfort of home.
The therapist provides guidance, prompts, and reflective exercises tailored to your needs.
Your artwork becomes a tool for self-exploration, growth, and coping, while maintaining privacy and confidentiality.
Who Can Benefit?
Art therapy is helpful for anyone looking to:
Reduce stress and anxiety
Explore emotions in a safe way
Build coping strategies
Work through life transitions or trauma
Support personal development and self-awareness
Why Choose a Registered Clinical Counsellor & Art Therapist?
You receive professional support grounded in both counselling and art therapy training.
Sessions are ethical, evidence-informed, and tailored to your goals.
The dual approach ensures both creative expression and therapeutic guidance for meaningful growth.
Groups & Workshops
Virginia works with organisations to develop mental health and well-being group programs and workshops, either as stand-alone sessions or as a series in a customised program.
Smaller group workshops allow for interactive participation and processing, while larger groups follow an instructional, educational format.
These sessions are designed to increase awareness and understanding, teach practical skills and provide resources for future support.

Scheduling Appointments
New clients are welcome to either book a 15-minute consultation through the online booking platform or skip this step and book their first 50-minute session. If you have difficulty scheduling online you’re also welcome to email Virginia to make the booking for you.
The first counselling session involves discussing what brings you to counselling, and Virginia will work collaboratively with you to identify your goals, and determine how often to meet. This varies among clients, with some scheduling weekly or bi-weekly and others checking-in monthly. It is not recommended to schedule more than one session a week as Virginia believes it’s important to allow time between sessions to process and integrate the work in each session.
How long a client engages in therapy can depend on their therapeutic goals, their existing coping skills and internal resources, their support network, and their preferred pace. One client may seek two to three sessions to work through a singular issue, while others may have extensive trauma or ongoing challenges that requires consistent exploration over time. This will be discussed in your first session and re-evaluated regularly. Virginia also provides resources and “homework” exercises to support clients between sessions.
What to Expect from Counselling
During your first session Virginia will gather information to help her understand the context of your situation and challenges. This may include asking questions about your health, lifestyle, family of origin, your childhood, the relationships in your life, your support system, and the stressors in your life.
As a client, there’s no right or wrong way to “do” counselling. Some clients know exactly what they want to get out of each session and arrive with journal notes and a specific topic to focus on. Others may show up feeling overwhelmed with life, unclear what to focus on and unsure how to begin, and that’s where Virginia can help with guiding questions, reflection prompts, coping skill development, emotional regulation exercises, and collaborative goal setting. Wherever you’re at, Virginia will help you navigate the challenges and concerns you bring with you, ensuring you feel safe and supported along the way.
Please get in touch if you have any questions or if need more information to help you feel better prepared to begin.
